Friends of Jardine Park

Calling all those who love Jardine Park as a wonderful community space.

What with a wet spring and warm summer (and irrigation – thanks QLDC), the trees and shrubs of the Welcome Forest in Jardine Park have put on a staggering amount of growth in just over a year!  Infill planting continues as plants are available from the Wakatipu Reforestation Trust (WRT), and plant protectors are being removed as plants become tall & sturdy enough.

The Welcome Forest initiative was supported by our friends at WRT, Trees that Count, QLDC & Z- Energy.  However, the maintenance of the Welcome Forest is a Community endeavour, similar to native plantings at Morning Star Reserve, Alpine Retreat, Gibbston Valley – to name a few.

We created the Friends of Jardine Park working group to help maintain this beautiful area, and we need you to help out at working bees – in particular weeding between trees, removing weeds within plastic protector bags, and staking taller trees to help them withstand the southerly winds that blow through the Park… not to mention the ongoing task of removing wilding pines from throughout the Park.

Working bees will be held on the 2nd Sunday of each month (through the spring / summer / autumn) from 2-4pm (drop in style) – so, for this Autumn: 13 March, 10 April and 8 May.  Please pop these dates into your calendar and join us on the mounds!
