Observant walkers of Jardine Park will have noticed the construction of the Flying Fox on the rise behind our Community Orchard, since we emerged from lockdown. The local children have been enjoying the ride – the “best in Queenstown” I was told yesterday, when we formally celebrated its launch (see photos here: https://kelvinpeninsula.org/gallery/). Full marks to the folks who came up with the idea; and then persevered over a period of 4 years to bring it from the talking, the planning, the designing and the funding phases to its actual construction. It always takes longer than expected; and even then delivery requires a certain amount of serendipity. So, thanks Christine, Philippa, Chris and John on the KPCA side; and Samantha and Adele at QLDC. Thanks also to the sponsors: Central Lakes Trust, Community Trust South, Sky City Queenstown and QLDC. What better way to honour National Volunteer Week and “Te Hua o te Mahi Tahi I, the benefit of working together“. As Volunteering New Zealand puts it: “The power and potential of volunteering, Mahi Aroha and social action shines through at times when our communities are stretched and challenged. … Through volunteers, we build strong, resilient and connected communities.”
